St. John the Evangelist was built in 1832 on a site donated by Gerard and Daniel Callaghan who were at the time the owners of Monkstown Castle. Designed by well known Cork architect William Hill who was also responsible for other well known buildings in Cork such as The North Infirmary, The Corn Market at Albert Quay and the Church of St Michael in Blackrock. The Church was built in the early Gothic Style of architecture, and features gable fronts and a canted chancel. It is located in a picturesque location in the village of Monkstown, and overlooks Cork Harbour with views out as far as Roches Point.
St John’s has an active Church of Ireland congregation within Carrigaline Union of Parishes.
Live at St John’s is a new collaboration with St John’s Church, Monkstown, and Graham White (FreezerRoom) who collectively have a shared ambition to programme special music and arts events.
St John’s is an important addition to our architectural heritage here in Monkstown, we are thankful to be given the opportunity to put on shows with its amazing natural acoustic sound, spiritual vibes, in this beautiful historic location.
Seating will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
Please be respectful to the residents. No alcohol is allowed in the Church. No parking outside St John’s, we ask that you please use the car park across from the Bosun and the Ensign or at Monkstown park. If you’re local you could walk! Enjoy the sea air and have a drink before the gig or use local cab company Riverside Cabs on 021 4842222. We also have a great bus service to Monkstown from the City.
