About Monkstown

Monkstown is a Village in County Cork Ireland 14 km Southeast of Cork City on the estuary of the River Lee with some magnificent views overlooking Cork Harbour out as far as Spike Island, Whitegate and Roches Point and Great Island Cobh. The name of the village is said to derive from an early Monastic site near to where Monkstown Castle stands.

Cork Harbour is known to be the second largest natural harbour in the world, Monkstown is one of the most sheltered parts of the Harbour and is well known for its excellent Pubs, Restaurants, as well as Monkstown Bay Sailing Club, Cork Harbour Marina, Monkstown Tennis Club, and Monkstown Golf Club.

The Passage West to Monkstown Railway line was built in 1902. On June 1st 1904 the entire route from Cork to Crosshaven was open. The Monkstown to Crosshaven section of the line closed in 1932 as buses became more popular. Monkstown has one of the most iconic tunnels (the “cut and cover”) in Cork which has beautiful murals commissioned by Cork County Council that pay homage to the town rail, maritime and industrial heritage.

We encourage people who are coming to a St John’s gig to enjoy what Monkstown has to offer. Napoli Italian Delicatessen will be open before gigs if you’d enjoy a glass of Italian wine & the Ensign Bar will provide drinks before and after the gig with live music. The Bosun provides accommodation and has a superb restaurant if you would like food and drinks before the live show and after. We also have a great restaurant at Monkstown Golf Club. Or you could take a walk along the water’s edge to Murph’s Bar on the Strand Road.
